Intro:
An Access Control system is generally that can restrict and monitor the movement of people and items in and out of a designated area. It can be designed around the 3 “W”s of:
- WHO is allowed to enter or exit
- WHERE they are allowed to exit or enter, and
- WHEN they are allowed to enter or exit
There are 4 types of authentications:
- Something the user knows
- EG: password or PIN
- Something the user has
- EG: smart card.
- Something the user is
- EG: fingerprint.
- A combination of more than one of the above
It typically consists of a lock and a reader. However, for a more comprehensive and effective system, it will usually consists of a controller and a server.
